Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, made simple

Making Tax Digital changes how sole traders and landlords report to HMRC. We set up the software, keep your digital records right and send your quarterly updates.

If you are not affected yet, we tell you exactly when you will be.

Who it affects and when

  • From 6 April 2026: qualifying income over £50,000
  • From 6 April 2027: qualifying income over £30,000
  • From 6 April 2028: qualifying income over £20,000
  • Qualifying income is your total self-employment and property income before expenses

What's included

  • Checking whether and when MTD applies to you
  • Choosing and setting up compatible software, usually Xero
  • Connecting bank feeds and simplifying your record-keeping
  • Submitting quarterly updates to HMRC
  • The final end-of-year declaration and tax calculation
  • Training so you feel confident using the software

What changes for you

Instead of one return a year, you keep digital records and send short quarterly updates, then finalise the year. Done well, it means fewer surprises and a clearer picture of what you owe.

Common questions

Does MTD apply to me?

Add up your self-employment and rental income before expenses. If it is over £50,000 MTD applies now, over £30,000 from April 2027 and over £20,000 from April 2028.

Can I still use spreadsheets?

Only with bridging software that connects to HMRC. Most clients find proper software like Xero simpler in the long run.

What happens if I miss a quarterly update?

MTD uses a points-based penalty system for late submissions. We keep your deadlines in our diary so you do not build up points.

Do landlords need MTD?

Yes, if their qualifying income is over the threshold. Rental income counts towards it alongside any self-employment income.
