Frequently asked questions

Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most often from business owners, contractors and Ukrainian clients navigating the UK tax system.

When do I need to register for VAT?

You usually need to register if your taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. Below that, voluntary registration may still make sense depending on your business, and we can advise you either way.

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?

If HMRC asks you to file, you must. Many people also need Self Assessment because they're self-employed or have untaxed income. The online filing and payment deadline is 31 January, and we make sure yours is done well before that.

Can you help me register as self-employed or set up a company?

Yes. We help you pick the right structure, register correctly, set up your bookkeeping and understand your tax deadlines, so you start clean instead of fixing mistakes later.

I'm Ukrainian and unsure about my tax position in the UK, can you help?

Absolutely. We explain UK tax rules in Ukrainian, help with residency questions, HMRC letters, Self Assessment and overseas income, all the things that feel overwhelming when you're new to the system.

Can you help if I receive benefits while self-employed?

Yes. We help you keep accurate records, understand what income to report and make sure your bookkeeping supports the information you need during reviews and ongoing claims.

Do you advise on employment status and IR35?

Yes. If you work through contracts, agencies or your own limited company, we can help you assess whether HMRC would view the arrangement as employment or self-employment and what that means for your tax.

Should I stay a sole trader or set up a limited company?

It depends on your profit, risk, admin load and long-term plans. Sole trader is simpler, while a limited company is legally separate and may suit you better as your business grows.

When does voluntary VAT registration make sense?

Voluntary VAT registration can make sense if your clients are VAT-registered, you have VAT to reclaim, or you want a more established image. It is not always the right choice, so we look at your situation first.

Can you help move my bookkeeping to Xero and Making Tax Digital?

Yes. We can set up Xero, migrate your records, connect bank feeds and make sure your VAT and payroll processes are ready for Making Tax Digital.

Can you help with HMRC letters, penalties or late registration issues?

Yes. If you've had HMRC letters, penalties, late filing issues or think you should have registered earlier, we can review the position and help you sort it out properly.
